Snail trail quilt

I have a friend that I have grown up with since I don't know, like 6th grade. Once we got into high school I met her family, and from that point on they have been apart of me. Her mom and dad have been apart of me as much as any other family member in my life.

Fast forward years later. My friend and I are grown and have kid(s) of our own. A few years ago she found out her mother had colon cancer. After a lot of health scares and lot of treatment, she was blessed and is now cancer free! I planned on making her a quilt based on her cancer ribbon and her favorite color. But i haven't found that right pattern yet. But now my friends father, months ago was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cancer. A very scary thing for this family. The family is having more gatherings together and as well he wanted a potluck BBQ with a bunch of family and friends. He wanted "A day for ___" .

I asked what his favorite color was and decided to make him the snail trail quilt. I got my pattern from MSQC youtube video. Only real difference was I made it all from yardage not pre-cuts.

I bit off a lot to get this done in a short time. I made this quilt in a few weeks time. (with about a week break in the middle, due to my own father having heart surgery).

The process was a bit slow.... But I did have from time to time some comic relief.

My youngest grabbed all my trimmings and threw them down on the floor. But then he decided to start "fishing" with them. Heck he was entertain!
A issue that I did come across with this pattern was, in the video she says each block should measure after trimming 8 inches. Well none and I mean none, came close to that lol. I was able to trim all of my blocks down to 7 inches.  That just meant that my quilt wouldn't match up to the same size.

I was trying to use what I had from my stash for backing. I almost didn't have enough. But since my blocks came out smaller I did have a few options. Hubby and I decided to go with a fleece fabric. Yes I did still use cotton batting. I was worried that it might be too warm. But we don't think that will be an issue, since most people going threw chemo get very cold. (Also since experimenting with different fabrics for backing, I do plan on making a quilt for our bed with a fleece backing).

I used my Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 to make a label for his quilt. This is the first time doing this. ("Thank you for making us part of your family. Love Stine and family.")

Here is the quilt fully quilted just waiting for binding at that time. I do have a video on my person facebook, gifting this to him. So if you are on my friends list you will be able to view that there. Lets just say my friends dad did enjoy the quilt and was excited enough to show it off to the others at the gathering.

A few days later my friends mom sent me a picture with him on the couch asleep.
This picture right here, is one of reasons why I love to make quilts.  Now I still need to find that just right pattern for my friends mom lol.
